How Mel’s Playbook works

Mel’s Playbook is a sports game simulator. Instead of one guess per game, it plays each game out thousands of times and tells you how often each result happens.

What goes into a simulation

What you get

For each game: the chance each side wins (and a draw in soccer), the projected score, the range of likely margins and totals, how often it ends as a close game or a blowout, and player props such as points, yards, shots and anytime touchdowns. Pro members can change the model’s settings (home field, injuries, momentum and more) and re-run any game.

Mel vs the betting line

Every game shows where Mel agrees or disagrees with the Vegas spread and total. The line is a strong benchmark, so when Mel is far from it the game gets a second, larger simulation to make sure the gap is real and not a data problem. Some leagues still blend the line into the final number while their engines are improved; we only change that when a league’s own numbers hold up on games they weren’t tuned on.

Graded in public

Every default-model pick is saved before the game starts and graded against the final score: winners, the spread, the total, and how well the percentages held up (Brier score and log loss). Misses stay on the record. See the results page and each league’s recent results on the game pages.

How it keeps improving

Each night the engines learn from the day’s final scores. Each week the model’s settings are re-fit on past games and a change is kept only if it does at least as well on recent games it wasn’t fitted on, so an update can’t quietly make the picks worse.
